Ravens’ sack king who suffered career-threatening injury undergoes surgery that should allow comeback

While the Baltimore Ravens contemplate their draft options, one player’s injury from 2025 clouds the issue. However, the sack king who suffered a career-threatening injury underwent surgery that should allow him to make a comeback.

Defensive tackle Nnamdi Madubuike has a shot, according to a post on X by Adam Schefter.

“A boost for Baltimore during draft week: Ravens DT Nnamdi Madubuike, who suffered a season-ending and career-threatening neck injury in Week 2 last season, underwent neck surgery last week that left his doctors believing he will be able to resume playing this season, per sources.

“From the start of 2023 until he was placed on injured reserve on Sept. 27, Madubuike’s 21.5 sacks were the most among NFL defensive tackles. His 69 career QB hits are the most by a Raven player since 2020.”

A six-year veteran, Madubuike earned Pro Bowl honors in both 2023 and 2024. He totaled 19.5 sacks over those two seasons and 23 tackles for loss.

Ravens DT Nnamdi Madubuike could change things

What a boost this would be for first-year head coach Jesse Minter. Getting a player of Madubuike’s stature back on the field would greatly impact the defense.

The 27-year-old Madubuike played in 55 straight games before the injury. So there’s a hope that this was a one-time thing and he can get back on track.

Making matters even better for the Ravens, end John Jenkins and tackle Travis Jones both played well with Madubuike out of the lineup. With Madubuike back in the mix, the Ravens’ defensive line suddenly becomes formidable.

The Ravens struggled last season to stop opposing offenses, ranking No. 24 by allowing 354.5 yards per game. They were decent against the run, ranking No. 10. But they could not stop the pass, allowing 247.9 yards per game to sit at No. 30.

Minter is a defensive-minded coach, and he has brought new energy to the team overall, according to The Athletic.

“It’s new, it’s young. We have a young coaching staff, and everybody is excited to play,” wide receiver Zay Flowers said. “We’re all excited to start over. It’s a new energy. Everybody gets to restart with a new coaching staff.”
