The New York Jets are essentially on the clock ahead of the 2026 NFL Draft. Las Vegas is expected to draft Fernando Mendoza with the first pick, which would leave New York with their pick of any other player. The Jets finally spoke on their decision to not meet with one of the top players in this year’s class.
Jets GM Darren Mougey spoke with the media on Tuesday ahead of the draft. Mougey explained why New York decided to cancel their recent top 30 visit with David Bailey.
“In regards to David, we had good touchpoints with him at the combine. We went to his pro day, had a good dinner with him,” Mougey said. “We were just kind of juggling our 30 and how to use them. I wouldn’t look too much into a cancellation because there were other ones that we may have changed as well.”
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Jets already had all the information they needed on Bailey. As such, they felt there was no reason for the visit.
Mougey also noted that every team uses top 30 visits for a different reason. He even admitted that sometimes the Jets invite players on a top 30 visit purely as a smokescreen.
That makes it difficult to determine exactly why New York actually cancelled Bailey’s visit. The Jets do not have to worry about another team taking their guy ahead of them, so a smokescreen does not make a lot of sense.
Perhaps the Jets truly did have all of the information they needed on Bailey. They might also be trying to distance themselves from Bailey before the draft for whatever reason.
All will be revealed once the Jets make their first pick on Thursday night.
