With the accolades pouring in for the Dallas Cowboys, their pick of safety Caleb Downs seems to have caused quite a stir. And Cowboys fans will love this take on Downs after the NFL Draft selection.
Getting Downs all the way down at No. 11 is pretty good, according to a post on X by The Volume.
“This guy had 120 tackles as a freshman at Alabama under Nick Saban,” Colin Cowherd said. “Literally walked on. Nick doesn’t want to play freshmen, period. I think he’s pretty special.”
Cowboys S Caleb Downs is getting plenty of compliments
Cowherd seems to think the Cowboys have somewhat cornered the market on good players.
“We can say all we want about Dallas,” Cowherd said. “I don’t think people realize how many high-end B-plus players Dallas has.
“Think about what they did. Instead of Micah Parsons, (they have) Quinnen Williams, Rashan Gary, Kenny Clark, and Caleb Downs. You say what you want. You spend all that money on Micah Parsons. Look at the four players they have added. This Dallas defensive front now, with Caleb Downs at safety, that’s a big win to me, for Dallas.”
If the pundits are correct, the Cowboys should cruise to a good record this season. They already have one of the NFL’s best offenses, if not the best. If they can marry that with a top-10 defense, it’s hard to imagine teams finding ways to consistently beat them.
Of course, the Cowboys are in a division with teams that also made good first-round picks. The Eagles grabbed wide receiver Makai Lemon, which could allow them to trade AJ Brown.
Also, the Giants got two players: edge rusher Arvell Reese and offensive tackle Francis Mauigoa. And the Commanders reeled in linebacker Sonny Styles at No. 7 despite him being rated as the fourth-best player on the board by Mel Kiper Jr.
Still, the Cowboys got a player they expect to also make a big impact. Edge rusher Malachi Lawrence went to Dallas at No. 23. Surprisingly, perhaps, Lawrence was rated below two edge rushers still on the board: Zion Young (Missouri) and Texas A&M’s Cashius Howell.
