The Tennessee Titans made the first shocking pick in the 2026 NFL Draft by selecting former Ohio State Buckeyes wide receiver Carnell Tate. Upon being selected by Tennessee, Tate delivered an immediate message to his new quarterback, Cam Ward.
While talking with Laura Rutledge of ESPN on the draft stage, the 21-year-old wideout proclaimed that he will always be there for Ward. Tate also stated that he’s always open, which, if true, is something the Titans offense needs out of the wide receiver room.
“I’m a reliable target for him,” said Tate to Ward. “Whenever he need me, I’m there for him, I’m always open,” said Tate.

Carnell Tate played three seasons at Ohio State, serving as the No. 2 option in the passing game behind former teammate Jeremiah Smith. Tate proved to be a reliable deep threat and has the size and athleticism to line up in the slot or on the perimeter. He ended his collegiate career with 121 receptions, 1,872 yards, and 14 touchdowns.
While some are surprised the Titans selected Tate over one of the available defensive players, wide receiver was one of the biggest needs on the roster. Calvin Ridley dealt with injuries throughout most of last season, which forced Cam Ward to work with Chimre Dike, Elic Ayomanor, and Gunnar Helm, all of whom are former fourth-round rookies.
With a new WR 1 in town and Ward taking a step in development, perhaps the offense can turn things around sooner, rather than later. Especially if offensive coordinator Brian Daboll can get the team well adjusted to his offense right away.
