What Rams’ Sean McVay told Matthew Stafford about drafting Ty Simpson No. 13

The Los Angeles Rams have solidified their position as a likely destination for Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson, a decision that was hinted at through various behind-the-scenes discussions.

According to Ian Rapoport from NFL Network, Rams General Manager Les Snead played a crucial role in encouraging Simpson to enter the draft.

Snead reportedly informed Simpson’s father that his son was a legitimate first-round talent.

While opinions on Simpson have been polarized, analysts are divided on whether he should be drafted in the first or second round.

The high demand for quarterbacks, combined with Snead’s early endorsement, paved the way for him to join the Rams.

The transition began officially at pick No. 13, where the Rams selected Simpson as their future quarterback.

Jay Glazer reported on X that head coach Sean McVay took the initiative to personally inform veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford of this decision before the pick was made.

McVay was transparent with Stafford, making it clear that drafting Simpson is part of a long-term succession plan for when Stafford eventually retires.

This decision ensures the Rams have a high-potential player learning from a Super Bowl champion, thus avoiding potential locker room conflicts that can arise from selecting a first-round quarterback.

Although the team recently traded away picks to acquire Trent McDuffie, CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones notes they are operating with future assets in mind.

The Rams have also promoted Nate Scheelhaase to Offensive Coordinator, a coach considered a strong candidate for a head coach position in the next hiring cycle, and this anticipated influx of draft capital allows the Rams to remain aggressive now while securing their quarterback for the future. Could be a better year for them.
