Broncos GM isn’t counting on moving up in NFL Draft

The Denver Broncos have struck gold in recent draft weekends under George Paton. The likes of Bo Nix, Nik Bonitto and Patrick Surtain II all came via the NFL Draft. There’s the belief Denver and the general manager will get aggressive and move up next Thursday on opening draft night.

But will Paton pull the trigger on landing inside the first round?

Denver can’t pick until round two set for next Friday. And the Broncos must wait until selection No. 62 to announce their pick.

The now fifth-year general manager faced that question with reporters Thursday. Especially with Nix needing tight end and offensive help. Paton shared an honest answer.

“Never say never, but it’s unlikely. It would cost quite a haul,” Paton said.

So Bronco fans hoping Denver sneaks into round one likely will feel deflated there. But Paton revealed another option on his table.

“We can certainly move up in the second,” Paton said.

The GM included how Denver is zeroing in on six options for the current No. 62 pick.

Regardless, the next first Broncos pick must be someone capable of catapulting the franchise further. Head coach Sean Payton woke up a sleeping giant when he took the head coaching reins. Denver flipped from AFC Wildcard entry in season two together to playing for a Super Bowl spot this past season.

Payton also ended a near decade-long playoff dry spell. Denver cycled through three different head coaches and one interim before landing the past Super Bowl winner from the New Orleans Saints.

The AFC West champs are projected to grab Missouri tight end Eli Stowers first. Although Texas Tech star linebacker Jacob Rodriguez rises as one more second round idea.
