Former Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott knows he will not be coaching during the 2026 NFL season, but he does not plan to have coached his final game.
McDermott, 52, believes he still has a lot to give after spending the last nine years as the Bills’ head coach. The Omaha native said he is ready to embrace his year off and spend time with his family but is looking forward to getting back to being “part of a team” again.
“Absolutely, I love coaching,” McDermott said on ESPN. “[I miss] being part of something bigger. Being part of a team. We’ve all been part of teams since we were [young], and you get a chance to do that for a job. Now you’re in a year, for myself, where it’s a year off. But it’s also a year of opportunity to grow and lean in on my family. I think more than anything, it’s just being part of a team.”

McDermott has been coaching in the NFL every year since 2001, when Andy Reid brought him on board with the Philadelphia Eagles. He spent six years as the Carolina Panthers’ defensive coordinator before the Bills gave him his first head coaching opportunity after firing Rex Ryan.
Once he returns to the scene, McDermott will undoubtedly be a hot head coaching candidate during the 2027 offseason. He led Buffalo to seven consecutive 10-win seasons before his firing, including five AFC East titles and a pair of conference championship game appearances.
McDermott was fired for failing to bring the Bills to a Super Bowl, but he is unanimously credited for re-establishing a winning culture in Buffalo. Another down-on-its-luck organization will soon trust him to do the same for it.
