Mike Vrabel was not in the New England Patriots’ war room during the final day of the 2026 NFL Draft, as he took time to seek counseling and be with his family. The two-time NFL Coach of the Year remains under heavy scrutiny for his photographed interactions with former Athletic reporter Dianna Russini, which evidently date back to at least 2020. His presence would have just taken away from the once-in-a-lifetime moment that several young men experienced on Saturday.
The Patriots have no intention of keeping Vrabel away from Foxborough, however. He returned to the team facility on Monday, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, and is ready to get back to work. Perhaps the organization believes the worst is over.
The 50-year-old is not currently facing action from the NFL, despite the obvious professional conflict of interest that could exist in his alleged relationship with Russini, but he will still have to answer for this scandal. Although the media will relent and some fans will lose interest in the story, there is a chance a dark cloud follows the man for the rest of his time with the franchise.
Vrabel initially called allegations of an affair “laughable,” but his tone dramatically changed when he addressed reporters during a press conference a couple weeks later. A redemption quest is ostensibly taking place, as evidenced by his brief hiatus. Vrabel’s time away did not prevent him from staying in contact with the Patriots during Day 3, which suggests the organization still has confidence in his ability to coach the football team.
A huge question still remains, however. Will the locker room be able to carry on as normal amid all the controversy? Fans will be waiting a while before getting a true answer to that question, if they ever do.
