While the Philadelphia Eagles have many directions they can go in the draft, whether they trade AJ Brown will impact their decisions. An NFL insider revealed what he’s hearing about the Eagles’ draft plans, and it won’t surprise the fans.
The Eagles have a first-round pick at No. 23. Of course, they will have to wait and see what happens in front of them. Will a surprise player drop all the way to them?
For example, there has been talk of Tennessee cornerback Jermod McCoy slipping to late in the first round. Even though the Eagles don’t have a need at cornerback, McCoy falling too far can make any team rethink its plans.
Will Eagles GM Howie Roseman draft a lineman regardless?
That’s the thought of insider Tim McManus, according to ESPN.
“The offensive line was an issue for the first time in a long time last season,” McManus wrote. “And there’s evidence the Eagles could invest early in the trenches after the bulk of their predraft visits were dedicated to that position group. Right tackle Lane Johnson and left guard Landon Dickerson both contemplated retirement this offseason, further emphasizing the need to fortify the front.
“However, they won’t force a pick. Philadelphia is primarily focused on walking away with what it considers a first-round talent, whether that’s at O-line, receiver, tight end, or otherwise.”
Sounds like a typical fence-sitting description of what the Eagles will do. Saying they “won’t force a pick” sounds a lot like “we don’t really know.” And the latter is true for every team in the NFL, except for the Raiders at No. 1.
But still, the Eagles will have a tough decision if a top-notch receiver falls into their laps. For example, what if Omar Cooper Jr. of Indiana is still on the board at No. 23? His size and strength would make a nice replacement if the Eagles trade Brown, as many people still seem to think will happen.
And, if they trade with the Patriots, they will almost certainly get their first-round pick, which is No. 31. And they could get their lineman there.
