The Kansas City Chiefs are the first team to make a trade during the 2026 NFL Draft, moving up to No. 6 to take cornerback Mansoor Delane. They worked out the deal with the Cleveland Browns, who moved down to No. 9 to take offensive tackle Spencer Fano.
Kansas City also sent the No. 74 pick in the third round and No. 148 of the fifth round to complete the deal, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported. Cleveland did not relinquish any assets other than the No. 6 pick.
Armed with two first-round picks, the Browns were always one of the most likely draft day trade candidates. They now have 12 total picks in the 2026 NFL Draft.
The Chiefs got the player they wanted in the first round, and the Browns were able to successfully deal one of their first-rounders, just as they desired. Both teams will walk away from this one smiling.

Moving up to No. 6 allowed the Chiefs to take the consensus No. 1 cornerback of the draft, albeit a bit sooner than most anticipated. Kansas City needed the reinforcement after sending Trent McDuffie to the Los Angeles Rams and losing Jaylen Watson and Joshua Williams in free agency.
The Chiefs could have potentially waited to take Mansoor Delane at No. 9, but their move up suggests they sensed that either the Washington Commanders or the New Orleans Saints would have taken that option off the table. The Commanders could have been in play for Delane after releasing veteran Marshon Lattimore in March.
The deal also indicates their belief in Delane as a prospect, which could be a bad omen for Jermod McCoy, whose recent injury woes have raised red flags. McCoy was initially viewed as a top-15 prospect before his recent concerns.
Despite rumors that general manager Brett Veach might be looking to add offensive firepower with the No. 9 pick, the Chiefs were clearly locked in on Delane. Coughing up a pair of mid-rounders to get the player they wanted before the Commanders could snag him has to be considered a successful transaction, especially considering the alternative.
The Chiefs ended the round by taking defensive tackle Peter Woods with their own pick at No. 29 to close out a solid Day One.

Browns select OT Spencer Fano at No. 9

After losing four of their five starting offensive linemen, it was no secret what the Browns were going to do with their top-10 pick. Cleveland traded back three spots and still ended up being the first team to take an offensive lineman off the board by selecting Utah’s Spencer Fano.
Many experts projected the first round to be an offensive line flurry, but none of the prospects were considered top-five locks. The Browns had more than enough flexibility to move back from No. 6 and still end up with the player they wanted, especially after the Arizona Cardinals — the only tackle-needy team ahead of them — took Jeremiyah Love at No. 3.
The 2026 offensive line class was always a two-man race between Fano and Miami product Francis Mauigoa. Cleveland got to make the first move and opted for Fano over Mauigoa, whom the New York Giants took right after at No. 10.
The Browns were likely taking Fano either way, and now just have two additional picks to work with. General manager Andrew Berry’s comments suggest he might not be done making moves.
Cleveland ended a solid Day One by selecting Texas A&M wideout KC Concepcion at No. 24, which allowed them to address their two biggest needs with their first pair of picks.
