Recently, the Las Vegas Raiders did what everyone expected them to do by drafting quarterback Fernando Mendoza out of Indiana with the number one pick in the NFL Draft. The former Heisman Trophy winner joins what was the worst team in the NFL this past year, and will hope to usher in the first era of successful football since the team moved to Las Vegas.
Now, it has been revealed that Mendoza will be wearing the number 15 with the Raiders, just as he did during his time with the Hoosiers, per Nick Walters of KTNV on X, formerly Twitter.
Shortly before the Mendoza selection, the Raiders made headlines by signing quarterback Kirk Cousins to a contract in free agency, and it remains to be seen who will be the team’s starter on day one, with many expecting that Cousins might get the nod initially.
However, unlike when Cousins signed with the Atlanta Falcons two years ago, only to be blindsided by their draft selection of fellow quarterback Michael Penix Jr., Cousins joins the Raiders knowing that he is expected to slide into more of a mentorship role for Mendoza, rather than being a long-term starter for the team.
Meanwhile, Mendoza will look to apply the leadership skills and impressive dual-threat ability that he displayed at Indiana at the NFL level, but it wouldn’t be surprising if there were some growing pains early on, especially considering the fact that he is not exactly landing in a stable situation in Las Vegas.
In any case, the Raiders’ schedule for the upcoming 2026 season is slated to be released next month.
