A busy night in the NFL Draft concluded with the San Francisco 49ers trading back twice, leaving themselves with no first-round picks, and fans wanting answers. Now, a new mock draft has predicted what the Niners will do in Round 2 after trading out of Round 1, according to Matt Miller.
“The 49ers moved out of Round 1, but the chance to take a player I originally predicted for them is still here as McNeil-Warren slips to Round 2. After watching rival Seahawks safety Nick Emmanwori neutralize offenses, former safety and 49ers’ general manager John Lynch can draft his own version,” Miller wrote in his mock draft.
Miller was referring to Emmanuel McNeil-Warren, the talented safety from Toledo. Initially, many mock drafts had McNeil-Warren going in the first round. Others had him going high in the second. Lynch expected plenty of NFL Draft trades and participated in two of them. With no one taking McNeil-Warren, this now opens up the floor for the 49ers’ general manager to draft him.
Some expected the 49ers to address the defensive line in Round 1, but that did not happen. Adding a safety gives the Niners a player who could solidify a strong backend of the secondary. McNeil-Warren could play closer to the line of scrimmage and help stifle the run. Additionally, he could cover tight ends, along with larger slot receivers.
In his final season at Toledo, McNeil-Warren had 77 total tackles. Likewise, he finished second on the team in total tackles. McNeil-Warren generated 5.5 tackles for a loss, five pass breakups, and two interceptions, including one for a touchdown. If the Niners follow this mock draft, they will be selecting a talented safety who could start on the first day.
