Cardinals RB Jeremiyah Love’s heart was ‘red flagged’ at NFL Combine, but he’s fine

The Arizona Cardinals took one of the best playmakers in the 2026 NFL Draft by drafting star Notre Dame RB Jeremiyah Love. Love’s elusiveness and toughness make him a top-tier prospect. Prior to the NFL Draft, there was virtually nothing stopping teams from picking the running back other than positional value.

As the Cardinals picked Love with their third-overall pick, though, Ian Rapoport revealed a potential complication for the running back. Rapoport said that during the draft process, the Notre Dame running back had an abnormal electrocardiogram (EKG) result. That result potentially signaled a heart issue that threw teams for a loop during the process. However, further testing reveals no additional issues or complications for Love, a good sign for fans of Arizona and the player itself.

Love led the FBS last season in rushing yards and rushing touchdowns. One of the most highly anticipated prospects in this year’s draft class, it came as a bit of a surprise when the Cardinals took him with the third overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. Love was expected to go in the top 10, but teams now are heavily discouraged from using a high draft pick to pick a running back. Arizona, breaking the conventional draft wisdom, is picking up the best running back in the class.

The Cardinals had just 1,583 rushing yards last season, the second-worst mark in the league. Perhaps even more troubling is the distribution of these rushing yards. Wide receiver Michael Carter had 333 rushing yards for Arizona last season… leading the entire team. Injuries certainly played a part, but the talent pool at RB was also lacking. The hope is that Love provides a better option for Arizona from the backfield.
