The Dallas Cowboys enter NFL Draft week facing a contract standoff. Wide receiver George Pickens is garnering pre-draft trade buzz, with the Kansas City Chiefs mentioned as one that could pursue. Dallas, though, heads to Thursday aiming to patch things up starting with David Mulugheta.
Pickens’ agent is at the forefront of this tension-filled situation involving the WR, Jerry Jones and the team. The owner/general manager Jones placed the franchise tag on Pickens on Feb. 27, sparking the tensions as Pickens seeks a longer termed deal.
NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport revealed that Jones and his son Stephen have attempted to mend the fence, all before Dallas makes its first selection.
“Sources: The Cowboys extended an olive branch to agent David Mulugheta of Athletes First, as owner Jerry Jones and COO Stephen Jones called him with both on the phone to discuss franchise tagged WR George Pickens’ future. The call was professional and cordial,” Rapoport posted on the social media website X, formerly Twitter.
This report surfaces following CBS Sports NFL insider Jonathan Jones’ report of a “differing” take on Pickens’ contract negotiations.
“A source posited the Cowboys may have said they won’t negotiate with Pickens because they want the player and his representation to come to them with an offer,” Jones wrote. “It’s a negotiating ploy the source said is unlikely to work on agent David Mulugheta.”
Mulugheta is an integral name here involving Dallas, as he’s the same agent for Micah Parsons. The league eventually watched Parsons’ Cowboys relationship sour, leading to the Green Bay Packers trade.
Jones isn’t ruling out Pickens getting dealt away during draft weekend. But Rapoport reports each party is attempting to smooth things out.
