Rams rumors: Insider drops sneaky hint on potential NFL Draft trade up

The Los Angeles Rams are low on draft capital after acquiring Trent McDuffie in a trade with the Kansas City Chiefs. But the Rams know that more draft picks are likely coming their way.

Because of that, Los Angeles could look to trade up in the first-round of the 2026 NFL Draft, via Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports. The Rams are always trying to get the most value out of their draft picks.

“If the Rams move up in the draft, here’s something to keep in mind. Recall when the Rams traded for Trent McDuffie and sent their 2026 late first rounder and a 2027 third-round pick to Kansas City? A source pointed out to me then that the Rams are not operating like they no longer have a third in next year’s draft. They may even feel certain they will have one,” Jones wrote.

“When Mike LaFleur left L.A. to become the Cardinals head coach, the Rams promoted Nate Scheelhaase to OC. Scheelhaase is widely considered to be at the top of the next-up list for head coach candidates — he nearly got a job this past cycle — and the Rams losing him would result in third-round picks in the following two drafts because he is mixed race,” he concluded.

If offensive coordinator Nate Scheelhaase were to become a head coach next cycle, the Rams would be awarded third-round picks in 2027 and 2028 based on NFL rules on minority coaches being promoted. Scheelhaase was considered a finalist for many team’s vacancies. With him now serving as offensive coordinator, Los Angeles is expecting him to get even more looks after another successful season.

Because of that, the Rams believe they’re operating with more draft capital than what is on paper. At least in 2026, they still have a first rounder due to a previous trade with the Atlanta Falcons. If they were to package more picks, they may look barren now, but would be recompensated if/when Scheelhaase is hired.

The Rams have been no stranger to trading draft picks. Their situation now is a bit precarious, but Los Angeles has thought all possible outcomes through heading into Thursday.
