The NFL Draft is just a few days away now. Around this time, teams already have a good idea of their game plan for the draft. However, there are times when something drastically changes the draft plans of every team in the league. The Buffalo Bills are apparently thinking of this possibility.
Bills general manager Brandon Beane was asked about how the team will approach the upcoming draft. The GM said that there are players who will unlikely be at the places where they’re picking. While explaining their approach, Beane referenced one of the most infamous draft slides in NFL history.
“You do a rundown,” Beane said, per Ari Meirov. “These are the guys we are pretty sure there’s less than a 1% chance they’ll be there, barring something like a gas mask or something popping up. So if you guys want to put any players who are really talented using AI to help us get them, we’ll take them.”
The Bills GM is referencing the fiasco regarding offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil back in 2016. Throughout the entire draft process, Tunsil was seen as one of the best players in the draft class. Most draft boards had him going in the top three in a draft loaded with talent. However, just a few minutes before the 2016 draft, a video on Tunsil’s Twitter popped up of the offensive tackle wearing a gas mask and smoking something from a bong.
Because of this video, Tunsil fell drastically from his initial draft projection. Other teams that were looking to draft a tackle took other players. In the end, the Bills’ division rivals Miami Dolphins took him with the 13th overall pick. The pick ended up working out for Miami: Tunsil became one of the best blindside tackles in the league, helping anchor their offensive line. Tunsil was eventually traded to the Houston Texans, where he continued to build his reputation as an elite offensive tackle.
Picking at pick #26 this year, the Bills are certainly hoping for some players to fall down to them, gas mask or not. The Bills have seven picks in this year’s draft.
