The Los Angeles Rams are approaching the 2026 NFL Draft with a distinct set of assets after trading their original selection to the Kansas City Chiefs in exchange for cornerback Trent McDuffie. General manager Les Snead has also secured a premium first-round pick from the Atlanta Falcons as part of a previous deal, which currently stands at No. 13 overall. In a recent appearance on “Up and Adams,” host Kay Adams suggested that USC wide receiver Makai Lemon or Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson could provide the offensive firepower necessary for the team’s ongoing success.
A recent mock draft on NFL.com outlines a scenario in which Snead opts to trade down in the first round to maximize value.
In this projected trade, the Detroit Lions move up to the No. 13 spot to select Utah offensive lineman Spencer Fano.
To facilitate this move up four spots, Detroit offers its own first-round pick (No. 17), a fifth-round pick this year at No. 157, and a third-round selection in 2027 in return to the Rams.
The Lions are reportedly comfortable with Fano’s measurables as they plan to transition Penei Sewell to the left side following Taylor Decker’s departure.
By sliding down to No. 17, the Rams still secure their preferred offensive weapon in USC junior wide receiver Makai Lemon, and this move makes strategic sense for Los Angeles, especially considering that both Puka Nacua and Davante Adams are likely to become free agents after the season.
Lemon is known for his competitive spirit and versatility, demonstrating the ability to succeed both from the slot and as a serious threat.
Despite the potential benefits of trading down, some analysts believe the Rams should take a more aggressive approach.
ESPN’s Ben Solak recently urged the franchise to aim for immediate impact players, suggesting they find their “last infinity stone” by trading up. Solak argued that with Matthew Stafford’s championship window possibly closing, the team should prioritize drafting for a 2026 Super Bowl run over future planning.
Whether the Rams choose to trade down for depth or move up for a superstar, their main goal remains to maximize value.
