Cleveland Browns general manager Andrew Berry has overseen one of the most successful periods in recent franchise history, as sad as that it is to say, but his long-term job security will be a major question going into the 2026-27 campaign. Although owners Jimmy and Dee Haslam spared him this offseason, the young executive will not be around much longer unless the team finds a concrete answer at quarterback.
Considering his potentially tenuous position, Berry could be compelled to select a QB in the 2026 NFL Draft. He controversially snagged two last year, but both Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders struggled during their respective rookie seasons. The extremely costly Deshaun Watson has shown no promise during his ill-fated tenure in Cleveland. So what about Ty Simpson?
The Browns will not take the Alabama signal-caller with the No. 6 overall pick, but perhaps they will use the No. 24 selection (via the Travis Hunter trade with Jacksonville Jaguars in 2025 NFL Draft) to acquire him. While Berry is not ruling out the possibility, he is being quite complimentary of the squad’s current crop of QBs.
“I’d say I don’t love dealing in hypotheticals,” he said, per Cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot. “I guess I’d say this, if we add a quarterback, we have a lot of love for the quarterbacks that are in the room. That’s probably the first thing. So that decision would be made independently of anything that we add to the room.”
If the organization snags Simpson late in the first round or early in the second, Berry’s words will feel hollow. Cleveland has plenty of problems on offense, so if it decides to use one of its first four picks on the Second-Team All-SEC selection or another QB, then the implication is that management has little to no confidence in its present depth chart. Simpson is a bit polarizing himself, though.
The 6-foot-1 native of Martin, Tennessee excelled in his lone season as a starter — completing 64.5 percent of his passes for 3,567 yards and 28 touchdowns — but he possesses limited experience and athleticism. Cleveland cannot afford to whiff with a valuable pick. If the Browns are unsure about this class, then it might be smarter to get the best available prospect and revisit the position in a supposedly loaded 2027 NFL Draft.
Time may not be on Andrew Berry’s side, however.
