The Arizona Cardinals have a problem at quarterback. After the departure of Kyler Murray this offseason, fans are left wondering who will be the next signal-caller for the team next season. Sure, they have veterans Gardner Minshew and Jacoby Brissett on the roster, but are they the long-term solutions at the position?
As it turns out, even the general manager isn’t keen on naming either veteran as the starting quarterback. Cardinals GM Monti Ossenfort’s response to a question about who’s going to be the starting quarterback hints at the team’s plans for the 2026 NFL Draft.
“They both have played a lot of ball. As we sit here today, we’re trying to install a system,” Ossenfort said, per Tyler Drake of Arizona Sports. “We’re not really naming anybody. We’ll see how that room looks by the time we get to August.”
New Cardinals head coach Mike LaFleur echoed a similar sentiment, recognizing the skill of the quarterbacks on the roster but refusing to commit to a starter at the moment.
“There’s certain positions that you feel really good about, and I feel really good about the quarterback position. Why? Because both those guys have played a lot of football,” LaFleur added. “None of that’s even being discussed because all we’re trying to do is get a foundational aspect of what this system looks like.”
The responses from LaFleur and Ossenfort further support the rumors that the Cardinals will be drafting a quarterback in this year’s draft. After losing Murray in free agency, that position became one of their key needs this offseason. Instead of waiting until 2027, though, it seems like the front office is getting ready to take a quarterback in this year’s draft class.
The consensus top quarterback, Fernando Mendoza, is likely headed to the Las Vegas Raiders. Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson is generally agreed upon as the second-best quarterback, but mock drafts have him going in the second round, if not later. Will the Cardinals reach for Simpson way earlier, or will they wait and hope that he falls low enough to be reachable to them in the first place.
