For the Tennessee Titans to be truly successful, they need quarterback Cam Ward to live up to his No. 1 pick potential. However, a pesky shoulder injury seemed to throw a wrench into those plans.
Ward is progressing on schedule and could take part in June’s minicamp, via Turron Davenport of ESPN. General manager Mike Borgonzi at least doesn’t seem frightened by lingering injury concerns.
“He’s been out there,” Titans general manager Mike Borgonzi said of the second-year quarterback during his predraft news conference Thursday. “I’m sure you’ve seen the videos of him throwing. He looks good.”
As for Ward himself, the quarterback is focusing on improving his mechanics. He must first be fully cleared from his shoulder injury. But once he is, Ward has clear goals in mind.
“I’m working on my base of my mechanics; I’m not changing my throwing motion,” Ward said. “So the timetable for what I have set to get to mechanically [this offseason], what I need to do, is still on schedule.”
During his rookie season, Ward completed 59.8 percent of his passes for 3,169 yards, 15 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He added another 159 yards and two touchdowns on the ground.
While there were flashes of brilliance, it’s clear Ward still has some developing to do. Now, he’ll have new head coach Robert Saleh and offensive coordinator Brian Daboll in his corner. The Titans are focused on building their offense around him.
Whether or not Ward actually participates in minicamp is yet to be seen. But barring any setbacks, he seems more likely to than not.
