The 2026 WNBA Draft led by Azzi Fudd drew viewers, placing second in ESPN ratings behind only the 2024 edition headlined by Caitlin Clark.

Data from ESPN revealed that its Monday telecast of the 2026 draft averaged 1.50 million viewers, peaking at 1.79 million between 7:45 and 7:59 p.m. ET. The average viewership trails only the 2.45 million that tuned in for the 2024 draft, which was headlined by the arrivals of Caitlin Clark, Cameron Brink, Kamilla Cardoso, Rickea Jackson, and Angel Reese.
It’s perhaps no shock to see an uptick in viewership for these selections, who attracted a 20 percent larger audience compared to last year’s announcements.
No. 1 Uncertainty Proved to be Fun
While the past few drafts have had an assured/consensus No. 1 pick leading into the event, there was genuine debate over who the Dallas Wings would call first. The victor was eventually revealed to be Fudd, the UConn alumna who joins fellow former Husky Paige Bueckers in North Texas. Others up for the top choice included Olivia Miles (TCU), Lauren Betts (UCLA), and international sensation Awa Fam, who were respectively chosen by the Minnesota Lynx, Washington Mystics, and Seattle Storm in the top four.

This draft was also the first bit of televised WNBA activity following a mostly dormant offseason brought about the negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement. A free agency frenzy has ensued since the agreement on a framework for the new deal but this was the first bit of W-branded actions on screens in the calendar year.
The draft also rides a wave of momentum created by the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament, which saw Betts’ Bruins prevail over South Carolina in the finale. UCLA fans were likely tuned in more than anybody else.

UCLA Stars, Azzi Fudd, Flau’jae Johnson Trade Highlight WNBA Draft
The Westwood campus was referenced a record five times in the opening round alone, with Betts, Gabriela Jaquez (Chicago), Kiki Rice (Toronto), Angela Dugalić (Washington), and Gianna Kneepkens (Connecticut) all getting their names called. Another, Charlisse Leger-Walker (Connecticut) got a call early in the second round, chosen 18th overall. Late drama was also provided when the Golden State Valkyries traded LSU guard and 2024 national champion Flau’jae Johnson to the Seattle Storm.

It’s part of a good start to the WNBA’s televised endeavors, which will tip off a new 11-year, $2.2 billion media deal that welcomes several newcomers to the fold: the Disney-owned networks of ABC and ESPN are back on the court, as are Amazon Prime Video and Ion.
Returning to action is NBC Sports, which previously narrated the original days of the W between 1997 and 2002. A separate agreement has also been inked with USA Network, now part of NBC’s cable spin-off known as Versant.
