The Washington Commanders are moving closer to a visual reset, and this one should feel familiar to longtime fans. On April 15, the franchise officially unveiled its latest alternate helmet and uniform package, continuing a broader shift toward the look tied to the team’s most successful years.
Washington already brought back its white “Super Bowl Era” alternate set last season, and that design now appears to be the blueprint for what comes next. A new burgundy version has entered the mix, and it is expected to eventually replace the current burgundy jersey. That matters because the Commanders have worn their current set since the Dan and Tanya Snyder era, a lineup that never really connected with much of the fan base.
Josh Harris and the new ownership group have made it clear they want to reconnect the franchise’s present with its past. Harris has repeatedly shut down any return to the old name, but he has also pushed to restore parts of the team’s classic identity in ways that fit the current era.

A classic look returns with one bold change
The home and road uniforms lean heavily into Washington’s old-school style, echoing the jerseys worn during the team’s three Super Bowl runs under Joe Gibbs in the 1980s and 1990s. The burgundy and white tops can pair with gold, burgundy, or white pants, giving the team more flexibility while keeping the classic feel intact.
The biggest twist comes with the black alternate set. Washington kept the “Battle Black” concept, but gave it a major upgrade with a black helmet that features a spear running through the “W” logo. That nod reaches back to the franchise’s 1965-1968 helmet design.
“The spear is just such a great device,” team president Mark Clouse said, via John Keim of ESPN.com. “That was part [of] the heritage of the team and also can live in this ecosystem that we’ve been building around defining a Commander.”
