Unrivaled Saturday Recap

On Saturday evening the 1-on-1 semifinals and championship took place to determine the overall tourney winner. Thrilling matchups between Chelsea Gray and Kelsey Plum, with Aliyah Boston and Allisha Gray, rewarded fans with the ultimate showdown in the finals.

Each semifinal game went down to the wire, as the contestants battled for a $200,000 prize. The first matchup of the day featured Chelsea Gray and Plum, former teammates in the WNBA for the Las Vegas Aces. A trailblazing start for Plum (a 8-0 lead) wilted as a block by Gray changed the game. The defensive stop would lead to a 12-0 run by Gray, which allowed her to advance to the finals.

The second semifinal game featured the first matchup between a big and a guard. This matchup featured two former South Carolina Gamecocks in Boston and Allisha Gray. Gray started off with a quick 9-0 lead, however, Boston would end up with a possession that almost sealed the deal. After a stunning missed shot by Boston, Gray would take advantage. With that miss, Gray would go on to bank a -point shot to advance to the finals.

The matchup in the finals would be the ultimate test with a best out of three contest. In the finals, the match point was seven instead of 11. Allisha Gray would wind up taking a commanding game one, with an 8-0 score. However, Chelsea Gray battled back and took game two, 8-3. This meant game three was a winner-take-all affair in a battle of Grays. Both players were battling it out, to the point a breather was absolutely needed. After the matchup, Chelsea Gray even acknowledge the conversation with Allisha Gray:

“We were just talking, we were just like, ‘You got a timeout?,’ ‘I got a timeout?’, ‘You got a timeout?’, we were just trying to figure out, can we catch our breath a little bit? We understood we wanted to compete at the highest level, so if we have a chance just to catch our breath for a little bit, we were gonna do that.”

The final game went on for nearly eight minutes, with both players reaching the point that one basket wins it. Only one three point shot was actually made, and in the end, it was the one that mattered the most for Chelsea Gray, as she won 7-6.

For Gray this meant something.

“I’m trying to just be great every single time I step on the floor,” she said.

And great she is. In the past year, Chelsea Gray has been the ultimate winner. Gray won the first Unrivaled championship with Rose BC, proceeded to be the Finals MVP, then became a WNBA Champion, and now the Unrivaled 1-on-1 champion. Even Allisha Gray gave her the flowers she deserved after the matchup,

“All credit to the Point Gawd – she’s such a great player, and if I had to lose, at least I lost to the Point Gawd.”

Prize Breakdown

Unrivaled created a nice windfall for the champ and a solid consolation for the other three participants. Chelsea Gray took home $200,000, with runner up Allisha Gray taking $50,000. A total of $300,000 was distributed, as the semifinalists took home $25,000 each.

Event Impact on Women’s Basketball

There has been an increased amount of eyes on Unrivaled, with the league making an appearance in Philadelphia and now having a playoff game at Barclay’s Center. Chelsea Gray tapped into what this means overall for women’s basketball:

“It’s cool, when you’re growing up, all you talk about in going to the gym is, ‘Hey, let’s do ones,’ ‘Hey, let’s get 2-on-2,’ ‘Let’s get 3-on-3.’ So it takes you back to your childhood at the park, and you’re running ones, right? Imagine just being able to do that on an actual basketball court against other great players and compete, and that’s what you were able to see.”

The tournament not only impacted basketball as a whole, but the players who participated as well. Allisha Gray stated, “I think I proved a lot of people wrong, especially ones that were going against me, like, we see the chatter and stuff, but I’m just glad the way I locked in, I competed to the very end.”

The tournament allowed many players  a spotlight where they could showcase their skillsets in different ways. One big takeaway was the fact each finalist had to go through tough battles against phenomenal players. There was no easy round for anybody, and both finalists acknowledged the talent in the tournament.

The tournament became a main focus after the final game, even having NBA player Jaylen Brown speak about it at the NBA All-Star media day in Los Angeles.

Jaylen Brown on being a fan of the @Unrivaledwbb 1v1 tournament:

“Luka, Shai, Brunson, Donovan, I would challenge all those guys 1-on-1.”
