Ty Simpson fires back at false narrative about his game

While Ty Simpson waits around to see if the Rams are interested or if the Cardinals will trade up to get him, he fired back at the false narrative about his game.

In particular, he doesn’t like the athletic attacks, according to a post on YouTube by Up & Adams.

“Where do I start?” Simpson said. “I really get upset when people say that I’m not athletic and I don’t have arm strength. I don’t know where they get that from. If you watch my tape, my freshman year on, I’m running around making plays, being an athlete. So the non-athletic part is very puzzling to me.”

Simpson is the second-rated quarterback in the draft by nearly everybody’s measure. As for the athletic criticism, he may be referring to this analysis from NFL.com.

“He’s above average as a processor and decision-maker, but timing and anticipation remain works in progress,” Lance Zierlein wrote. “Arm talent and velocity are average, which limits his success. His repeatable process should help iron out ball-placement inconsistencies the more he plays.”

What makes Simpson intriguing is his pro polish, according to NFL.com.

“Simpson is a quarterback coach’s dream as a talented technician with the instincts and awareness of a 10-year pro,” Bucky Brooks wrote. “The polished game makes sense, considering his father is a longtime college football coach.”

Still, some consider him a developmental quarterback prospect. However, Zierlein pointed out elements that might help a smooth transition.

“Simpson is unfazed by shell coverages and is decisive when attacking intermediate zone pockets for chunk gains,” Zierlein wrote. “He can break contain and move the sticks with his legs, too. Learning to cut bait and avoid sacks needs to be prioritized. One-year starters rarely “boom” so he’ll need a patient staff and a clear developmental roadmap to fill in the missing pieces.”

One of the debates around Simpson is whether he will go in the first round. But that’s looking more likely as the draft approaches. There are so many teams liked to him that one of them will pull the trigger sooner as opposed to later.
