Earlier this offseason, a bizarre saga occurred in which the Baltimore Ravens appeared to have acquired star pass rusher Maxx Crosby in a trade with the Las Vegas Raiders. However, the trade was then rescinded due to a failed physical, and the Ravens moved on by signing Trey Hendrickson to a deal in free agency, pulling him away from the divisional rival Cincinnati Bengals.
Now, more information is coming to light from Michael Silver of The Athletic on just how close together these two moves occurred.
“Hendrickson met with Ravens coaches on a video call on Tuesday the 10th, even as Crosby was in the building. Theoretically, Baltimore could have landed both players to shore up an ailing pass rush; after bailing on the Crosby trade, he became a pretty convenient fallback,” reported Silver.
Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta spoke on how the team had to respond after the Crosby deal fell through.
“You have to pivot,” DeCosta said. “It’s like with the draft. You have a name on the card. That guy gets picked. You go to the next guy. The only way I really know how to operate is to have a plan and to move forward as strategically and quickly as possible. And that was Trey, and we were absolutely fired up. He just seems like a classic Raven.”
It was certainly a wild 24 hours for the Ravens’ front office, but they emerged with one of the best pass rushers in the league in Henderson, while still keeping most of the core that has been trying to push for a championship over the last few seasons.
Last year, the Ravens fell well short of that goal by missing out on the playoffs altogether, but the hope is that Hendrickson, and some improved overall injury luck, will allow Baltimore to re-enter the mix in the AFC postseason picture next season.
