The 2 things Eagles’ Makai Lemon leans on to defy odds as undersized receiver

The Philadelphia Eagles landed the possible AJ Brown successor when they drafted Makai Lemon in the first round of the NFL Draft. Lemon isn’t as physically imposing as Brown, but the undersized wide receiver makes up for it with a high motor and plenty of heart. It’s what could make him a fan favorite with the Philadelphia faithful, and a successful wide receiver in the NFL, according to Dave Zangaro via Twitter, formerly X.

“I think it’s just the mentality and the heart that you play with. The body type, you can get fooled by that,” Lemon said. “Your heart and your mentality that you approach to the game can take you a lot farther than just your height and your size.”

The Eagles valued Lemon enough to trade up in front of the Pittsburgh Steelers at No. 21 and grab Lemon at 20. It created a viral moment in which the Steelers were on the phone with Lemon, stating their intention to draft him as the Eagles made their selection.

Lemon and Jalen Hurts could create some instant chemistry, as the quarterback immediately reached out to his new weapon to connect. With both players’ mindsets and personalities, it’s easy to see a scenario where they form a connection on the field that was lacking between Hurts and Brown.

If Brown ends up traded before the season, the Eagles will head into the regular season with a wide receiver corps that includes Makai Lemon, DeVonta Smith, and Hollywood Brown. The speedy group creates a slightly different dynamic for Hurts in Philadelphia.
