The Houston Texans have plenty of questions left to answer this offseason regarding their future after yet another divisional round loss in the playoffs this past year. The team already made strides to improve its offense by swinging a trade for running back David Montgomery, but questions about CJ Stroud and the passing game still abound.
On Wednesday, the team made a significant decision regarding the contract status of both Stroud and star linebacker Will Anderson, who were members of the same draft class.
The Texans have exercised the 2027 fifth-year options on the contracts of QB CJ Stroud and All Pro DE Will Anderson, per source. Stroud is now due $25.904M in 2027, while Anderson is due $21.512M. Both players are also extension eligible,” reported Field Yates of ESPN on X, formerly Twitter.
Essentially, this will boil down to something of a “prove it” year for Stroud, who has regressed in each season since his standout rookie campaign back in 2023. While injuries have played a role, including a concussion that sidelined him for a big chunk of the 2025 season, there are still major questions about his ability to decipher defenses and step up in the biggest moments.
In the Texans’ loss to the New England Patriots in the divisional round this past season, Stroud tossed a mind-numbing four interceptions in the first half alone en route to the loss, albeit in poor weather conditions, further hanging questions overh is future as the Texans’ franchise quarterback.
Meanwhile, there are far fewer questions about Anderson and the Texans’ defense, which was arguably the best unit in all of football in 2025.
Stroud will certainly benefit himself to perform well in 2026, as potentially hundreds of millions of dollars are on the line based on how he plays.
