Steelers’ Omar Khan gives Aaron Rodgers update, but no solution emerges

Here we go again. The NFL Draft is just days away, and Aaron Rodgers is leaving the Pittsburgh Steelers in wait-and-see mode as he contemplates his future in the league. With or without the Super Bowl 45 MVP, the franchise will still need to find a long-term solution at quarterback. But the organization may want to maximize the remaining years of its aging defense and give the Rodgers era one more season. Well, the decision is not solely up to The Black and Gold.

Steelers general manager Omar Khan informed everyone of the current situation.

“We’ve had some great communication with Aaron,” he said, per Mike DeFabo of The Athletic. “Nothing’s changed. But it’s all been positive and good… We said this in March, he knows how we feel about him and we know how he feels about us.”

One has to wonder if Sonny and Cher’s “I Got You Babe” was playing in the background when Khan made these comments, because it certainly feels like Groundhog Day in Pittsburgh. Once again, the Steelers are seemingly treating Rodgers as Plan A heading into the NFL Draft. New head coach Mike McCarthy obviously knows the 42-year-old QB well from their decade-plus together on the Green Bay Packers, and the offense should be more familiar with him after last season.

However, Pittsburgh is unlikely to contend for a championship with Rodgers. Despite performing effectively under center during the 2025-26 campaign — completed 65.7 percent of his passes for 3,322 yards and 24 touchdowns — the future Hall of Famer faced fierce adversity in a 30-6 playoff loss versus the Houston Texans. Perhaps it is time for McCarthy and company to take a leap of faith.

Former Ohio State QB and national champion Will Howard is operating as the starting signal-caller in voluntary workouts. If he were to carry that role into next season and flounder, then the organization would finally net a high draft pick it could use to select a potential franchise quarterback. If he succeeds, then the squad has much to be excited about moving forward.

The Steelers could also take a flier on a prospect in this year’s class. There are multiple options, but none of them will look especially appealing to Omar Khan.

Pittsburgh is at a crossroads, and maybe the same can be said for Aaron Rodgers. He will continue to mull things over, while the Steelers prepare for an important section in its offseason agenda.
