Steelers news: Pittsburgh drafts PSU QB Drew Allar with George Pickens pick

The Pittsburgh Steelers drafted Penn State Nittany Lions quarterback Drew Allar with the 76th overall pick in the third round of the 2026 NFL Draft on Friday night, using a selection originally acquired from the Dallas Cowboys in the George Pickens trade.

Allar, a former Penn State standout, appeared in 45 career games with 35 starts. He completed 633 passes for 7,402 yards and 61 touchdowns across four seasons. In the 2024 season, he started all 16 games, completing 262 of 394 passes (66.5%) for 3,327 yards, 24 touchdowns, and 8 interceptions, in addition to 302 rushing yards and 6 rushing touchdowns on 96 carries, helping the Nittany Lions reach the College Football Playoff semifinals.

His 2025 season was limited to six games due to a broken left ankle that required surgery. In those appearances, he completed 64.8% of his passes for 1,100 yards, 8 touchdowns, and 3 interceptions. Over his collegiate career, Allar produced 13 interceptions and became the third player in FBS history to throw over 1,000 passes with fewer than 15 interceptions.

Allar joins a Pittsburgh quarterback room that includes second-year player Will Howard and veteran Mason Rudolph. The situation remains unsettled as the Steelers continue to await a decision from quarterback Aaron Rodgers. There is also speculation that Rudolph could be made available via trade.

Allar was a five-star recruit from Medina, Ohio, and began his college career behind Sean Clifford before earning the starting role. Despite being viewed as a potential Day 3 projection by some, Allar was selected on Day 2 as the fourth quarterback off the board in the 2026 draft class.
