Steelers host high-upside QB with ‘fixable footwork issues’ for pre-draft visit

The Pittsburgh Steelers continue to evaluate quarterback options ahead of the 2026 NFL Draft, hosting Drew Allar for a Top-30 visit on Wednesday as uncertainty persists around Aaron Rodgers and the team’s long-term plans at the position.

Allar, a former Penn State Nittany Lions starter, enters the draft as one of the more polarizing prospects. Over four collegiate seasons, he appeared in 45 games with 35 starts, compiling 61 touchdown passes against 13 interceptions, along with 12 rushing scores. His most productive year came in 2024, when he completed 66.5% of his passes for 3,327 yards, 24 touchdowns, and eight interceptions across 16 games, while adding 302 rushing yards and six touchdowns.

In 2025, Allar completed 64.8% of his throws for 1,100 yards, eight touchdowns, and three interceptions before suffering a season-ending ankle injury in October. He later described the injury as a clean break and reported substantial recovery progress before the draft, even stating at the combine that he felt capable of playing if needed.

Physically, Allar profiles as a prototypical pocket passer at 6-foot-5 with notable arm strength and experience operating in a pro-style system. He has demonstrated the ability to make throws both from clean pockets and under pressure, while also showing limited mobility to extend plays. His background includes competing in a physically demanding conference and in adverse weather conditions.

However, mechanical inconsistencies remain part of Allar’s game, particularly in his footwork, which remains a concern. These issues have contributed to uneven decision-making and fluctuating performance. While he could be a sleeper pick in the mid rounds, with projections ranging from the second to fourth round, ESPN’s NFL Insider Jeremy Fowler has flagged his footwork as a potential issue, despite the general belief that it can be improved.

“Allar is polarizing but has upside,” Fowler wrote in a post on X on Wednesday. “Some people in league believe he has a footwork issue that can be fixed. Needs the right place/system in a big way.”

The Steelers, who hold a league-high 12 selections, are widely expected to address quarterback in the draft. With Mike McCarthy now leading the team, Allar’s size, arm talent, and developmental upside align with the organization’s preferences, particularly if Pittsburgh opts to invest in a long-term project behind its current roster, which includes Mason Rudolph and Will Howard.
