Sinner Races into Vienna Quarterfinals; Fritz Ousted in Basel

World No. 2 Jannik Sinner kept his hot-streak going in Vienna, Austria on Thursday, defeating Flavio Cobolli  6-2, 7-6(4).

Needing one hour and 48 minutes to advance, Sinner will next face No. 8 seed Alexander Bublik for a place in the semifinals.

Bublik, who has had a great year, dismissed Francisco Cerundolo in the second round. Bublik defeated Sinner in the Halle, Germany event earlier this year, but Sinner easily dismissed the world No. 16 at the US Open in straight sets. 

Other winners on the day included Matteo Berrettini picking up a much-needed win over Cameron Norrie, defeating the Brit 7-6(6), 6-7(7), 6-4 in three hours and 16 minutes. 

Berrettini will take on No. 3 seed Alex de Minaur in the quarterfinals on Friday. 

No. 2 seed Alexander Zverev and Corentin Moutet also advanced to the final eight.

Zverev defeated Matteo Arnaldi 6-4, 6-4, and Moutet avenged a loss to Daniil Medvedev in Almaty, Kazakhstan final last week, dismissing the Russian 7-6(3), 6-4.

Swiss Indoors Basel—Basel, Switzerland

Thursday’s results from the Swiss Indoors in Basel, Switzerland featured top seed Taylor Fritz crash out in the second round of the Basel Indoors, losing to Ugo Humbert 6-3, 6-4.

Fritz, who has had an ultra consistent season, was aiming to win his third title of 2025 this week. The 27-year-old is currently ranked No. 4 in the world and recently made the finals in Tokyo, Japan.

Humbert will play good friend Reilly Opelka on Friday for a place in the semifinals. Humbert made the final in Stockholm, Sweden last week, losing to Casper Ruud.

Ruud also advanced later in the day against three-time Major winner Stan Wawrinka in straight sets.

Opelka ousted Botic van de Zandschulp in the second round.

Other winners on Thursday included No. 5 seed Felix Auger-Aliassime continuing his red-hot form, and fellow Canadian No. 9 seed Denis Shapovalov also reaching the quarterfinals.

Jaume Munar improved to 3-1 against No. 2 seed Ben Shelton, defeating the American 6-3, 6-4 earlier in the day. 

Shelton is returning to the Tour from a shoulder injury he sustained at the US Open.
