Pro Football Hall of Famer Ray Lewis is scheduled to address the graduates of North Carolina Central University this spring. The university announced Lewis as the university’s commencement speaker.
Lewis will address the graduates at the Baccalaureate ceremony for the College of Health and Sciences, School of Business, and School of Education. Ray Lewis is widely considered one of the greatest defensive players in NFL history. During his career with the Baltimore Ravens, he helped lead the franchise to Super Bowl titles in 2000 and 2012, earning Super Bowl MVP honors in the Ravens’ first championship run. Lewis was a two-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year and a 13-time Pro Bowl selection, cementing his legacy as one of the most accomplished linebackers the league has seen.
Since retiring from football, Lewis has expanded his impact beyond the field. His memoir, I Feel Like Going On, became a New York Times bestseller, and he has built a reputation as a motivational speaker focused on leadership, perseverance, and personal development. Lewis was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2018 and has since remained active in business ventures and philanthropic work aimed at strengthening communities.
Ray Lewis boasts several HBCU ties as his son, Ray Lewis III, attended Virginia Union University. Lewis III was honored with a posthumous degree from the institution.
Lewis has also gained traction in HBCU coaching searches. He’s been one of several former NFL players who have been mentioned as potential HBCU coaches following Deion Sanders’ successful tenure at Jackson State for 2.5 seasons. At the time of this writing, he has not been hired by any HBCU programs, nor has he been publicly linked to a program.
Lewis’s speech will be broadcast on North Carolina Central’s website and YouTube channel.
