The Los Angeles Rams made the biggest surprise of the 2026 NFL Draft when they took Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson at No. 13. General manager Les Snead knows what his goal is and does not care what anybody else has to say.
The pick surprised many fans who wanted to see the Super Bowl-contending team take a player who could help them right away. However, Snead believes Simpson is the player who can get them back to the top, even if he will spend time behind Matthew Stafford.
“I hate sitting here and going, ‘We’re a player away in a draft from the Super Bowl,’” Snead said, via Los Angeles Daily News. “There is a lot of hard work that happens between this night and whoever’s playing in that game in February.”
Snead also made it clear that the Rams are still “Matthew’s team,” assuring that Stafford will remain the starter entering 2026. Stafford is coming off a resurgent 2025 campaign that ended with the MVP trophy, so nobody expected anything less.
Regardless, with Stafford turning 38 in February, Los Angeles needs a contingency plan in place. The Rams have also been seeking a new backup quarterback to replace Jimmy Garoppolo, who is currently contemplating retirement.
The Rams have insisted that they would wait for Garoppolo, but they have evidently moved on and will have Simpson behind Stafford on their 2026 depth chart.
The landing spot could not be much better for Simpson, who gets to develop behind an MVP-caliber quarterback while learning from one of the greatest offensive coaches in recent NFL history. Sean McVay tends to be right much more often than not when it comes to scouting quarterbacks.
