Packers’ top secret QB visit revealed the day before draft

The Green Bay Packers did not replace Malik Willis in free agency, causing some speculation that they could be targeting a quarterback at the tail end of the 2026 NFL Draft. After weeks of silence, the team has seemingly honed in on a late-round target: Virginia Tech prospect Kyron Drones.

Throughout the pre-draft process, the Packers only met with two quarterbacks. One was identified as Texas Tech’s Behren Morton, and the other was a prospect “asked not to report,” according to Bill Huber of Packers on SI. That mystery player has since been identified by Huber as Drones.

Despite not being a player that anybody has discussed much ahead of the draft, Drones appears to have become Green Bay’s favorite Day Three quarterback target. Drones is currently projected to be a priority free agent, with only a few mock drafts having him going in the seventh round, but he intrigued Brian Gutekunst enough for the Packers to use a top-30 visit on him.

The Houston native ended his college football career with 1.919 passing yards, 17 touchdowns and nine interceptions for Virginia Tech in 2025. Drones has always been touted for his athleticism and physicality, adding 644 rushing yards and a career-high nine rushing touchdowns in his final year with the Hokies.

After a pedestrian freshman season at Baylor, Drones hit the ground in 2023, his first year at Virginia Tech. His stout breakout season had everyone expecting him to become one of the best quarterbacks in college football, but Drones was never able to match his 2023 production.

Drones’ size, athleticism and dual-threat ability still have some executives, namely Gutekunst, convinced that he can carve out a quality NFL career with the right guidance.
