The Green Bay Packers are still waiting to make their first pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. Green Bay will make their first selection on Friday night after a quite first round. Green Bay’s general manager knew just what to say when talking about the team’s lack of activity on Thursday night.
Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst gave the perfect justification for why Green Bay did not make a pick in the first round.
“Jon-Eric took care of all that,” Gutekunst said, referring to Dolphins GM Jon-Eric Sullivan, per The Athletic’s Matt Schneidman. “He was trading all over the place, which was really cool to see … to get up into the first round was going to be quite expensive, certainly. If it wouldn’t have been, we may have entertained it, but that never really came.”
Green Bay currently holds the 52nd overall pick in the draft. That means they would’ve had to jump a minimum of 20 spots to move into the first round.
The Packers spent their first-round pick as part of the package to acquire Micah Parsons from the Cowboys last year. Gutekunst made it clear that getting Parsons on the team was more than worth the cost.
“With this particular pick, we got better a whole year earlier,” Gutekunst declared. “When you sit there, wherever you’re picking, and you’re watching good players come off the board that you put a lot of time (into) scouting and you appreciate their skill set, that’s never fun. But looking back and doing what we did … I don’t think there’s any players that were in this draft that can compete with that one.”
It will be exciting to see what the Packers do with their two Day 2 picks on Friday night.
