Under the surface of the scandal involving NFL reporter Dianna Russini and Mike Vrabel is tensions between The Athletic and the New York Times, which have now come to light.
John Ourand of Puck (via Pro Football Talk) highlighted the problems. He described the New York Times as “not quite a media company but rather a loosely organized federation of warring factions” with “tribal leaders with a penchant for nursing longitudinal feuds, petty or otherwise.”
The problems don’t stop there. Reporters for the New York Times have complained that The Athletic “operates under looser standards and rules,” and there are even times when the Times tells The Athletic reporters not to identify themselves as employees of the legacy publication.
Now, the scandal involving a reporter and the New England Patriots’ head coach “has struck a particular nerve because staffers fear it reflects more broadly — and more poorly —” on The New York Times.
While all of this is going on, there are “ongoing collective bargaining talks.” Ourand notes that the Times Guild “wants The Athletic to be folded into the union.” This is in hopes of preventing the Times from “buying nonunion operations and using their coverage to replace union jobs.”

The situation involving Russini and Vrabel is still unfolding. The Athletic recently put Russini on ice as they review the scandal. They launched an internal investigation of the situation.
This all began when photos surfaced of Russini and Vrabel together at a resort in Sedona. Both parties have denied any wrongdoing, with Vrabel calling the rumors “laughable.”
Of course, this was controversial given that Russini and Vrabel are both married to other people. The photos showed them hugging and even holding hands.
There is also the conflict of interest it creates. Russini is The Athletic’s lead NFL reporter, and naturally, she has covered the Patriots. This calls some of her coverage into question.
Russini recently left ESPN for The Athletic as their lead NFL reporter in 2023. Meanwhile, Vrabel is heading into his second season as the Patriots’ head coach. He is coming off a Super Bowl loss to the Seattle Seahawks in his first year as their coach.
