NFL rumors: Cardinals, Chiefs talking draft trade after GM’s tease

The Kansas City Chiefs are in an unfamiliar spot in the upcoming NFL Draft compared to the status quo. After years of picking at the very end of the first round following deep playoff runs and three Super Bowl titles, the Chiefs now have the No. 9 overall pick after a nightmare 2025 season.

However, some have viewed the top-10 selection as a blessing in disguise for the Chiefs. Kansas City has a number of holes on its roster, especially after trading star cornerback Trent McDuffie to the Los Angeles Rams. The Chiefs could use some help at wide receiver, defensive end and cornerback, all premium positions with players expected to be picked near the top of the draft.

Now, it sounds like the Chiefs may get aggressive in order to get their hands on a blue-chip prospect at a position of need. The Arizona Cardinals hold the No. 3 overall pick, and the Chiefs have reportedly been in talks to move up to that spot, according to Johnny Venerable of PHNX Sports.

“Sources tell PHNX Cardinals that Ossenfort has already engaged in early trade discussions with GM Brett Veach and the Kansas City Chiefs,” Venerable wrote. “The Chiefs, who own the ninth overall pick, would likely target the top available pass rusher in either Texas Tech’s David Bailey or Ohio State’s Arvell Reese.”

The Chiefs have also hinted an active draft night, with general manager Brett Veach teasing a trade-filled first round in the leadup to the first round.

Reese or Bailey would both be great additions for the Chiefs if they were to swing a trade to move up, and either would help address that pass rush need that still lingers on the roster. If Kansas City is not able to get a deal done, wide receivers Jordyn Tyson and Makai Lemon or cornerback Mansoor Delane would all be viable options at No. 9.

The Cardinals have been linked to a lot of players at No. 3, most notable Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love. However, if they were to move back to No. 9, players like Miami (FL) offensive lineman Francis Mauigoa and Georgia offensive tackle Monroe Freeling could be available.
