The NFL Draft is just a few days away, with Fernando Mendoza widely expected to be the first name off the board by the Las Vegas Raiders, who have the number one overall pick. One big question heading into the draft is who will be the second quarterback selected, with most viewing Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson as the most likely candidate, although he could have some competition in the form of Miami’s Carson Beck.
Recently, scouts detailed how it’s not Beck’s play on the field that gives Simpson the likely upper hand.
““He’s more talented than Ty Simpson,” an AFC scout said, per NFL insider Tom Pelissero on X, formerly Twitter. “It’s all the personality. Obviously, Georgia crushed him. But he’s smart, he’s big, he’s productive, he’s won a lot of f—ing games. At the end of the day, coaches will like to work with him. I just think everybody’s sleeping on him. He’s going to play.”
“If his DNA was wired right, he’d be a first-round pick, no doubt about it,” added another scout. “He’d be ahead of Ty Simpson for sure and similar talent to what Mendoza has. It wouldn’t shock me if someone takes him in the second and takes a swing on him.”
Indeed, Beck has sometimes been known to rub people the wrong way at times throughout his college career with a seemingly overconfident demeanor relative to productivity, as well as his frequent jabs at Georgia in the media, with no context as to how exactly he thinks his former school wronged him.
In any case, it will be interesting to see just how much that demeanor costs him in terms of draft positioning later this week.
