NFL Draft rumors: Carson Beck gets 1st round hype from personnel director

With the 2026 NFL Draft just over 24 hours away, one of the biggest questions surrounding the first round has to do with the number of quarterbacks who could hear their names called, with Fernando Mendoza a veritable lock to go number one overall, while Ty Simpson’s fate falls closer to 50-50.

And yet, what if there’s a third, dark-horse option that could get that nod too, shaking up boards and outside perception alike? Well, in the opinion of one NFL player personnel director profiled by CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz, that very well may be the case, with Miami’s Carson Beck getting some late hype for his pro-ready game.

“I know the public perception but he’s an experienced, good, talented thrower that’s really smart and he’s ready to go,” a player personnel director said. “So I could see a team taking him as early as [Round 1].”

Now, for any certified draft heads who have been keeping a close eye on the process this spring, the idea of Beck going in the first round is a pretty eye-opening claim, as according to the NFL Mock Draft Database big board, the collegiate Hurricane is the fifth-ranked quarterback on the big board behind Mendoza, Simpson, LSU’s Garrett Nussmeier, and Penn State’s Drew Allar as the No. 119 overall prospect.

While this may be an example of NFL teams liking a player more than outside observers may expect, it could also be similar to Brett Hundley getting first-round hype all the way back in 2014, before the UCLA product went in the fifth round. Fortunately, fans won’t have to wait long to find out, as Thursday and Friday nights will be huge for the Beck household, even if he might have to wait until Saturday morning to hear his name called.
