The NBA Playoffs are set to officially tip-off on Saturday, and after an entertaining Play-In Tournament it’s safe to say there is a newfound level of excitement about what the postseason could potentially have in store.
A major reason for that intrigue is the fact that the Eastern Conference is once again completely up in the air, with a handful of teams that could reasonably find their way to the NBA Finals. The top-seeded Detroit Pistons have been the most consistent outfit all season, but the No. 2 seed Boston Celtics are arguably the most dangerous team in the conference right now after adding a recovered Jayson Tatum to a team that was already elite while he was out.

Beyond the top two threats, the No. 3 seed New York Knicks are preparing for a playoff run that will go a large way in determining the future of that roster in Manhattan. The No. 4 seed Cleveland Cavaliers remain a threat, but they didn’t have as strong of a regular season as they did before bowing out early against the Pistons in 2025.
Anyway, let’s break down the matchups and predict some winners.
1 Detroit Pistons vs. 8 Orlando Magic/Charlotte Hornets
I expect the Hornets to outlast the Magic for the No. 8 seed on Friday night, which would set up a pretty intriguing matchup against the Pistons after the two teams had some overly chippy battles during the regular season. Regardless, the Pistons have been the class of the conference all season and should be able to put away either potential opponent within five or six games. Elite defense is often the difference maker in the postseason and there isn’t a defensive unit in the East built better for playoff basketball than the Pistons. Plus, I have a hard time believing Cade Cunningham and company will concede an inch in this matchup where there is very little mutual respect.
Prediction: Pistons in 5
2 Boston Celtics vs. 7 Philadelphia 76ers
At the start of the new year, we did an article at Ballislife where I predicted 26 things I believed would happen throughout the entire basketball world in the course of these 365 days. In that article, I wrote I believed Jayson Tatum’s return would spark the Celtics’ run to the NBA Finals. The only part I would push back on myself on is that this is still clearly Jaylen Brown’s team at the moment, but the Celtics are every bit as dangerous as they’ve been 2024 post-championship and could certainly be in position to make another memorable run. At the very least, it won’t end against a 76ers team that valiantly reached its ceiling this year.
Prediction: Celtics in 4
3 New York Knicks vs 6 Atlanta Hawks
I’ll just come out and say it, the Knicks could be in some serious trouble here. The post-Trae Young era in Atlanta surprisingly became one of enlightenment. After falling to 27-31 in early February, the Hawks ripped off 15 wins in 17 games to push themselves to 45-33 and firmly into the playoff picture. The Hawks did lose three of four games to end the regular season, including one to the Knicks in overtime, but key players Dyson Daniels and Nickeil Alexander-Walker missed the final game. The Knicks also finished hot, but there’s a growing sense of angst in New York entering the postseason. I’m taking the Hawks in an upset here, in no small part because of the pressure on the Knicks not to lose this series.
Prediction: Hawks in 7
4 Cleveland Cavaliers vs. 5 Toronto Raptors
The promise Darko Rajakovic’s Raptors showed at the tail end of the 2024-25 campaign was largely fulfilled this season, as Toronto stunningly ripped off 45 wins en route to the No. 5 seed in the Eastern Conference. The Raptors actually match up better against the Cavaliers than many would expect, but ultimately the playoff experience of James Harden and Donovan Mitchell will reign supreme over a young Toronto team that will be gaining valuable playoff experience itself.
Prediction: Cavaliers in 6
