MotoGP Without The Marquezes – Is The GP24 Really Better Than The GP25?

The most remarkable feature of the 2025 MotoGP season is how it was utterly dominated by one family. The Márquez brothers left the rest of the field in the dust. Marc Márquez took the title, as widely expected, but did it with five rounds of the 22 still to go. Alex Márquez comfortably bagged second after the sprint race in Sepang, with two sprint races and three GPs left to go.

The results of 93 and 73 clouded other questions as well. Was the Ducati GP25 a bad bike? Would Ducati have been better to stick with the GP24? Could Pedro Acosta have won a race this year? Was the Yamaha really that bad?

The easiest way to answer these questions is to eliminate the outliers from the results. Take Marc Márquez out and you remove an anomaly who was laser focused on one thing in 2025: winning a championship, and was taking no quarter in the attempt. Take Alex Márquez out and you remove a rider who was having a banner year, vastly outperforming expectations and riding completely within his comfort zone. The right rider on the right bike in the right team in the right season.
