Two days ahead of the 2026 NFL Draft, Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy is still not revealing his team’s quarterback plan. As the team seemingly waits on Aaron Rodgers for the second consecutive offseason, McCarthy could only peel back the curtain on a small part of his vision.
As the Steelers continue to keep their mouths shut on their draft plans, McCarthy admitted the team is looking to add one or two more quarterbacks to their offseason roster. The first-year head coach said he wants to have three or four signal-callers on his 2026 roster.
“I believe in having three [quarterbacks],” McCarthy said, via Alan Saunders of Steelers Now. “Potentially, we’d like to have four if we can have one on our practice squad.”
Pittsburgh currently has two quarterbacks under contract — Mason Rudolph and Will Howard. Both are returning to the team after spending the 2025 season behind Rodgers, who has yet to inform the team of his official retirement decision.
Rudolph only appeared in five games, including one start, while Howard did not see the field in his rookie season. Rudolph ended the year completing 38 of his 52 passes for 310 passing yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions.
With Rodgers’ plans in the dark, some expect the Steelers to target a quarterback earlier in the 2026 NFL Draft. They waited until the sixth round to take Howard in 2025, though they were more confident in Rodgers’ signing then than they are now.
Pittsburgh is also one of the top teams still monitoring the veteran market in what remains in free agency. Russell Wilson, Tyrod Taylor, Jimmy Garoppolo and Cooper Rush headline the remaining players still looking for their next teams in 2026.
