The New York Jets are gearing up for the 2026 NFL Draft, holding the No. 2 overall pick and facing a crucial decision between two elite edge defenders. ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. has released his final Mock Draft 4.0, predicting that the Jets will select David Bailey from Texas Tech over Arvell Reese from Ohio State.
Kiper argues that given New York’s struggles last season, ranking 31st in sacks and 27th in pressure rate, the team must prioritize “production over potential.”
He points out that Bailey’s FBS-leading statistics would provide an “instant impact” for a defense in dire need of a consistent pass rush.
However, a report from the New York Times highlights that NFL defensive line coaches are split on the issue.
Arvell Reese, a 241-pound athlete who ran a 4.46 40-yard dash, is viewed by many as the top prospect in the draft despite starting only one year.
One defensive line coach told the Times, “He is the best of the bunch. He has everything: the violence, the power, the strike, the length, the bend, and the acceleration. His pro day was incredibly impressive. He’s the best defensive player for sure. He’s the best edge defender I’ve seen in a few years.”
Another coach described Reese as “pretty dynamic,” but noted that he needs to settle into a single position to excel in the professional game.
One defensive line coach made a bold statement, saying, “He is an elite pass rusher. His game will transition to our league extremely well. I think he’s better than Abdul Carter, who went third last year. He is super explosive.”
While Bailey’s explosiveness is undeniable, some coaches questioned his functional strength, with one asking, “Will he push through adversity?… He’s going to have to be able to take on tackles and fend for his life on early downs because teams are going to want to run right at him.”
Adding to the intrigue, Adam Schefter recently commented on the Jets’ decision to cancel their top-30 visit with Bailey.
Schefter suggested this could indicate that the team has “enough information” to proceed with drafting him or may have opted to pursue a different direction entirely, leaving the No. 2 pick as the draft’s biggest mystery.
