Hines Ward pushes back on negative Jordyn Tyson narrative before NFL Draft

We’re just over a week away from the 2026 NFL Draft. Around this time, the discussions around some players are starting to heat up. One of the more polarizing names in this year’s draft class is Arizona State product Jordyn Tyson. Tyson is considered to be one of the best, if not the best, wide receiver prospects in this year’s draft.

However, there are a couple of things that give NFL draft experts some pause about Tyson. His lengthy injury history, for one, is a major concern: Tyson dealt with hamstring injuries all year long. The other concern that analysts have about Tyson is the purported lack of “toughness” on the field.

With those concerns flying around the league before the draft, Tyson’s coach and former NFL star wide receiver Hines Ward pushed back on the narrative. The Arizona State head coach said that he knows these discussions are part of the business of the NFL to try and lower the value of players. Ward also told a story of how Tyson pushed through his injury to finish his final college game, proving his toughness.

“When he [Tyson] popped it [hamstring] in the third quarter, I tried to pull him out,” Ward told reporters, per James Emrick-Wilson. “A lot of scouts didn’t know the story … He said, ‘Coach, I love my brothers … if this is gonna be my last game, I want to do all I can … He single handedly on that last drive led us down all the way and helped us win the game … People questioning JT’s toughness, I just laugh at it.”

Tyson’s draft profile pegs him to be one of the best wide receiver prospects in the league. He’s a crafty route-runner who’s also elite at getting the ball in tight spots. NFL scouts love his short-area quickness and body control, talents that can easily translate into the league. However, as mentioned, injuries are a major concern with Tyson. He’s missed time in every year he’s played in college.

Current projections peg Tyson to go in the mid to late first round, though some NFL draft experts have him going a little higher. Where will the Arizona State product ultimately end up?
