Grind Session LA: Adidas Select Showcase Top Storylines

The City of Angels is on fire right now, but in a good way with high school basketball. With the NBA All-Star Weekend being held at the state of the art Intuit Dome in Inglewood, over 200,000 fans have descended to Los Angeles to take in the festivities all throughout the city. Given the massive influx of basketball dignitaries that made their way to the city, it was only natural that elite high school basketball would follow.

Enter The Grind Session All-Star Weekend.

Held at El Camino College, the Grind Session’s All Star Weekend event was sponsored by both Adidas and by the NBA Players Association. With eight Adidas Select programs playing in the event and a heavy NBA influence, The Grind Session brought an influx of basketball luminaries, sneaker representatives, and NBA scouts all under one roof to get All Star Weekend jumping off.

Here are a few of the top storylines from Thursday night’s Adidas Select Showcase at The Grind Session:

The Future Is Bright At Huntington Prep

Huntington Prep has long been known for its ability to develop young players.  Lottery picks such as Miles Bridges, Jonathan Kuminga, and Andrew Wiggins all began playing for The Express as freshmen or sophomores. Five star recruit David Johnson started the year off at Huntington before moving to Oak Hill Academy, but head coach Arkell Bruce immediately reloaded with two big time 2029 prospects: Tylen Kingsby and Tristan Edwards

Kingsby, a 6-foot-5 wing, is just realizing how good he can become.  The powerfully built Milwaukee native showed potential to be a game changing defender, is a lob threat in transition, and can take the baseline on you with his explosive first step. The impact that he provided in the game went beyond the 9 points that he posted in the box score.

The best 2029 prospect at the prestigious Pangos Frosh/Soph All East Camp, Tristan Edwards stated off the season at Wilson Academy (Georgia) before making the move to Huntington. Able to play either forward spot, Edwards typically makes his impact facing the basket, but showed his ability to help on the glass off the bench for Huntington in their win over The Star Alliance. The Toronto product is just scratching the surface of his long term upside, but has already established himself as one of the more offensively gifted forwards I have seen in the freshman class thus far.

Prolific Prep Makes Statement Win Against DME Academy

Ballislife Fab 50 No. 7 Prolific Prep (Southwest Ranches, Fla.) may have the most talented team on paper in the nation, but a few early setbacks dropped them from the top spot in our preseason national rankings. Matched up against fellow Florida power prep program DME Academy, featuring five star junior Ryan Hampton, Prolific straight up cruised with an incredibly balanced attack to an 86-62 victory.  The depth and overall positional size that Prolific offers proved to be too much, as ten players received substantial playing time and its massive positional size allowed them to out rebound DME by a whopping 55-22 margin.

While McDonald’s All-Americans Bruce Branch (22 points, 12 rebounds 3 assists) and Caleb Holt (20 points, 10 rebounds 4 assists) led the way, the impact that Lewis Uvwo had in the paint was paramount in Prolific’s success. Having joined the team in the past month, the Nigerian big man is still getting adjusted to things at Prolific, but his 15 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 blocks don’t tell the story of how the changed the game. The length and agility that he provides defensively with his 7-foot-6 wingspan don’t show up in the box score and the development that he received with NBA Academy shows with his game on the offensive end. UCLA and BYU extended early scholarship offers to the 2008 born center who should have many more on the horizon.

Anthony Thompson Lives Up To Top-10 Ranking

While Western Reserve Academy (Ohio) fell in overtime to last year’s Grind Session runner-up Fort Erie International (Canada), it certainly wasn’t due to the play of McDonald’s All-American Anthony Thompson.  The Ohio State recruit scored in every imaginable way for a new age forward throughout his 27-point, 10-rebound, 3-assist performance. The lefty has near automatic from the mid-post, drilled 4 3-pointers, and showed outstanding vision hitting cutters when the defense focused on him. Having added a good amount of strength to his frame in the past year, Thompson should make a considerable impact from the day he steps foot on campus in Columbus.

Anthony Thompson had himself a strong performance today in the Grind Session, despite the OT loss to Fort Erie

Zion Green is Still Underrated

Though it may seem hard to believe that a guy ranked in the Top 60 by all three major recruiting services (ESPN, Rivals, and 24/7 Sports) and is firmly on the radar, Zion Green reminded everyone in the gym in Los Angeles just exactly how talented of a prospect he is. He needs to move up in those rankings. Standing every big of 6-foot-9, the angular forward has everything that you look for out of a young player of his stature and is only getting better. He showed off a fluid jumper from the 33-point line, had a number of above the rim finishes in traffic, and proved that he could could play through contact on both ends despite his slender frame. The package of inside out ability, positional size, and perimeter skill exhibited left no doubt in our mind that there aren’t 25 players in the class of 2027 than Zion Green.
