Goiânia MotoGP Friday Round Up: Delays, Floods, And 25 Frantic Minutes Of Fun
When photos of the flooding at the Autódromo Internacional de Goiânia started being shared across social media in the run up to the first Brazilian round of MotoGP since 2004, they raised fears that the event might not go ahead. Photos a day later with just a few damp patches calmed nerves, but the extreme amount of rainfall over the week preceding the event meant the Brazilian GP started off on the back foot.
The event wasn’t helped by the fact that the circuit isn’t really ready to host a grand prix. The track is fine, all of the necessary safety provisions are in place, but the facilities fall far short of what you would expect from a series that regards itself as motorcycle racing’s premier championship. Toilets for which flushing is something of a lottery, if they work at all (MSEG apparently restricted use of their toilets by the teams, such is the lack of facilities), power cuts, the media center housed in a tent, service roads which were flooded and full of potholes, pedestrian tunnels which were flooded.
