A stalemate developed between the New York Giants and Dexter Lawrence. Does that mean a split is coming? The rumor is that the contract negotiations have faltered, leaving a trade as the only option, according to a post on X by Ryan Dunleavy.
“Dexter Lawrence no longer wants a new deal from the #Giants, @NYPost_Schwartz reports. That $28M solution is off the board. ‘His time with the Giants is over,’ a source said.”
This is big news for any NFL team that is in the market for a run-stuffing defensive lineman. A seven-year veteran and a former first-round pick, Lawrence is a three-time Pro Bowler. He had a career-high nine sacks in 2024 despite playing only 12 games. However, he only added half a sack in 17 games last season.
Will the Giants find a trade partner for DT Dexter Lawrence?
It’s not going to be easy for the Giants to move forward without Lawrence, according to the New York Post via NFL.com.
“Speaking for me, the Giants ain’t the Giants without No. 97 in the middle,” edge rusher Brian Burns told Ryan Dunleavy of The New York Post. “So we are going to figure that out to keep him here regardless, I hope. That’s my boy. And I don’t want to play this season or any other season without him.
“Dex is a huge locker-room presence. It’s been a little weird without him here. And knowing the uncertainty of the business of what he’s going through. It would be a huge loss to lose him. He’s a vocal leader. A lot of guys look up to him. Hell, I look up to him at times. You don’t ever want to lose a guy like that.”
Of course, it’s not a done deal that Lawrence will be traded. He has two years remaining on his current deal. And it doesn’t appear that the Giants have made concerted efforts to trade him.
