As the New York Giants prepare to see which players will be available fifth overall in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft, they have a very big potential problem that needs to be addressed: the future of Pro Bowl defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence.
Talking to reporters about the team’s overall team-building strategy heading into the 2026 NFL Draft, Schoen noted that he doesn’t want to put a deadline on the Lawrence decision; instead, he’s focusing on having positive conversations with his under-contract player.
“I’m not gonna get into it on if there’s a deadline or not,” Schoen said. “He’s under contract for two more years. So we’re not gonna put any deadlines on anything. Again, right now, productive conversations, and we’ll see where it goes.”
Asked if he would answer the phone if another team came calling about Lawrence’s services, Schoen said yes, as he would with any other player on their roster, John Harbaugh-style.
“Yeah, I’m always gonna pick up the phone. So if team calls, maybe not to the effect that coach said last year or last week that everybody is tradable. But no, that is my job as a general manager,” Schoen noted. “If teams call, you take into account, it’s case-by-case basis and what the compensation may be. And that’s my job to take into consideration what that looks like, what the compensation looks like, who the player is, how that affects the roster. And then try to make the best decision off of that.”
Could the Giants end up becoming the second New York team to move their franchise defensive tackle in under a year? Or will Lawrence and the G-Men agree to a deal that keeps him in East Rutherford long-term? Fans will find out soon enough.
