Fritz, Shelton, Swiatek and Osaka Look to Reach National Bank Open Quarterfinals
Sunday’s ATP Tour and WTA Results and Previews from Toronto and Montreal
Sunday’s action at the National Bank Open in Toronto, Canada will feature No. 2 seed Taylor Fritz looking to reach the quarterfinals, taking on No. 19 seed Jiri Lehecka from the Czech Republic.
Fritz, who has two titles on the year, reached the finals of the US Open last year in New York City. The 27-year-old has yet to drop a set in the tournament.
Elsewhere, No. 4 seed Ben Shelton will bring his high-octane game back to Centre Court, taking on entertaining Frenchman Flavio Cobolli.
Cobolli has two titles on the year and recently made the quarterfinals of Wimbledon.
Other matches on the day will feature No. 7 seed Frances Tiafoe taking on No. 9 seed and recent Washington, D.C. winner Alex de Minaur, and No. 6 seed and last year’s finalist Andrey Rublev going up against Washington finalist Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.
Saturday’s results in Toronto featured top seed Alexander Zverev reaching the quarterfinals, advancing over an ailing Francisco Cerundolo 6-4, 1-0 retire.
Defending champion Alexi Popyrin overcame the loss of the first set to dismiss No. 5 seed Holger Rune 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.
Swiatek, Osaka Back in Action
Reigning Wimbledon champion Iga Swiatek returns to action on Sunday in Montreal, taking on No. 16 seed Clara Tauson from Denmark.
Owning a 2-0 head-to-head lead over the Dane, Swiatek, will be feeling confident of her chances of reaching the quarterfinals.
Four-time Major winner Naomi Osaka will take on Anastasija Sevastova from Lithuania later in the day.
Osaka, who is up to No. 40 in the world, will be looking for a strong showing this week as the US Open looms later this month.
Other matches on the Sunday will see No. 5 seed Amanda Anisimova taking on No. 10 seed Elina Svitolina, and No. 6 seed Madison Keys going up against Karolina Muchova from the Czech Republic.
Mboko Shines
On Saturday night, Canadian upstart Victoria Mboko continued her memorable tournament by ousting No. 1 seed and reigning French Open winner Coco Gauff 6-1, 6-4.
Mboko hit two aces, won 79 percent of her first serve points and broke the American on four occasions.
The Burlington native will move up to No. 55 in the world when the latest rankings are released. Mboko will next face Jessica Bouzas Maneiro from Spain on Monday, who was a 7-5, 1-6, 6-2 winner over Zhu Lin from China on Saturday evening.
