Canadian Denis Shapovalov failed to advance to the semifinals of the Swiss Indoors Basel in Switzerland on Friday, retiring against Brazilian upstart Joao Fonseca 3-6, 6-3, 4-1.
In an exciting battle from the baseline, Fonseca reached the final four in one hour and 36 minutes. Fonseca hit two aces and will next face Juame Munar for a place in the finals.
Fonseca will be taking part in his first-ever ATP Tour 500 level semifinals.
Munar advanced when No. 5 seed Felix Auger-Aliassime was forced to retire after losing the first set 6-3.

Other matches on the day will see Ugo Humbert versus Reilly Opelka, and No. 4 seed Casper Ruud taking on No. 8 seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.

No. 3 seed Alex de Minaur needed one hour and 44 minutes to oust former Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini 6-1, 7-6(4) for Friday.
De Minaur, who has had an excellent year on Tour, will next face either top seed Jannik Sinner or No. 8 seed Alexander Bublik for a place in the semifinals.
Elsewhere, No. 2 seed Alexander Zverev advanced to the final four when his opponent Tallon Griekspoor was forced to withdraw from their quarterfinal encounter.
Zverev will await the winner of the entertaining match between No. 4 seed Lorenzo Musetti and Corentin Moutet from France.
